Start Your Own Business

The confident and ever smiling Brian, owner of Beijing Kitchen (one of the Glovo’s partner stores) takes a break and smiles at the couriers in front of him as he listens to the questions. He explains how he is able to run a successful business on the Glovo platform while collaborating as a courier on the same platform.

The financial wellness event was held at Beijing Kitchen, Westlands on the 17th of December and the couriers who were in attendance were able to receive some interesting first hand information from Brian, the proprietor.

If you were unable to attend, fret not, a summary of the information shared is below:

  • The first step is to choose the business that you feel is best for you. Choose a business that you have interest in and that you feel you can do every single day without getting tired/bored.
  • Start setting money aside for the business. Save! Save! Save!
  • Once you start racking up the money then make a business plan. The plan should be done to suit you and to ensure the business is a success.
  • Set up a business budget and always ensure to stay within budget so as to see where the money is going and also how much money is coming into the business.
  • Once the store is up and running, train your staff on the business needs and how to perform so as to ensure they are empowered. An empowered team will enable you to run the business with ease as you will be able to concentrate on other duties.
  • Manage the team of employees e.g. ensure that they are able to do what is required to minimize complaints and cancellations from customers.
  • Staff motivation is also key and there are many ways to motivate the store staff without giving them money eg encouraging them to have nuclear family come in for a free meal a month
  • Ensure to check the store inventory eg if you have a restaurant, set aside a day to check the  amount of rice still remaining in the pantry, how many liters of cooking oil are available etc. This will help when doing the weekly/ daily budget and avoid having miscellaneous costs come up that affect the business growth.

Most importantly is how to manage your time between running the business and collaborating. In this case you can concentrate on the business needs in the morning e.g. shop for fresh produce from the market and plan for the day and then collaborate with Glovo in the evening hours.

Is this something that you feel you can do?
